A violation is the least serious charge that can be levied in a criminal court.  A conviction of a violation does not result in a criminal record, because a violation is not a crime.  That is not to say that they do not carry criminal sanction, as they are punishable by up to 15 days in jail, fines, surcharges and can also include an order of protection. 

These cases are almost always adjudicated in City, Town and Village Courts in the jurisdiction where the violation is alleged to have occurred.  Some common violations include disorderly conduct, harassment in the second degree and unlawful possession of marijuana.
